: I am looking to buy a new video card, right now the two contenders
: are the ATI 3D Xpression and a card based on the S3 VIRGE 3D chip.
: Can either or both of these be used under Linux for 2D video. Is
: there any support in Linux to take advantage of the 3D or MPEG
: Thanks in advance for any help.
If this is the ATI Card with the 3D Rage II chipset (and I believe it
is, since I just got one with a new Pentium Pro from GW2000), then
it is not supported by XFree86 yet (as of 3.2). XFree86 only supports
the original 3D Rage chipset. The Virge and the Virge/VX chips _are_
supported by a new XFree86 3.2 driver, which many people seem to be
able to use now. I called GW2000 and am replacing my ATI card with
the 4MB STB S3D Virge/VX card they sell.
