Unfortunately, you're missing compatibility with anything except
Windows 3.x and Windows 95. The HP 820 Cse printer is designed to
work only with these systems, requiring software to function that is
MS Windows specific. That's why it sells for about $100 less than the
855Cse that is compatible with all of the preceding DeskJet units and
that does respond to drivers for the earlier units and has both
parallel PC and AppleTalk connections. Your printer box and
documentation should clearly say "designed for Windows only" or some
similar wording.
More and more hardware pieces are being designed that lean on Windows
specific software in lieu of internal hardware to lower the price and
people are buying them believing that if they works with Windows 95,
they must be the latest and greatest. Look out for _anything_ that
stresses "compatibility with" and "designed for" Windows without
mention of other OSs.
Sorry about the bad news - it may be possible for someone in the
future to provide software for Linux that will work with this device,
but I don't know enough details to say if that is possible or
probable.
