Hi,

does anyone know whether Xfree86 Rel 3.2 supports NeoMagic Graphics
chips for Notebooks ? Has anyone written a driver yet ?

Cheers,

Rainer

It supports some. Check www.xfree86.org to see which ones.
I set up a laptop a while back with a neomagic and it worked
pretty well with x.

I can't get full resolution on my Dell Latitude, using the NM 2070 chipset.
NeoMagic has been absolutely NO help, either. Dell claims that NeoMagic
won't release the chip specifications to them.

The page at http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptops
points to a Japanese site that gives an idea on booting in
graphics mode, then starting X. It leaves you with no usable
virtual consoles, though.

XInside theoretically has a driver for it, but I refuse to buy
it on principle and because I've heard some bum reviews of it as well,
so I cannot comment on it.

Bob

ps: If you get it working well, let me know how you did it.

Hi Rainer.  The last time I asked, no.  But, Xinside has a payware
server.  I just bought a different notebook that XFree86 supported, and
it worked very well (except for a pesky pcmcia/mouse conflict).  Eric

1. XFree86 4 on a laptop with a Neomagic graphics chip

Hi there.

There is this problem which prevents me from upgrading the XFree86 3.3.x
on my Laptop to XFree86 4.x. The Neomagic chip IS supported by both the
old and the newXFree86 drivers, but the problem with version 4 and
higher is that no matter what I do, I just can't seem to get the
resolution any different from 640x480, which makes it pretty much
unusable. I want to be able to set it a 1024x768. But nothing helps.
It's just like the configuration file is ignored when I try to manually
add the resolution (I even briefly see something like "resolution
"1024x768" deleted" along with similar lines about other otherwise
perfectly possible resolutions when I start up X, just before teh screen
switches to graphics mode.

The videochip works fine with 3.3.6, but since my laptop doesn't have
any 3d graphics anyway, I really want to start using 4 or higher
instead.

Another thing I noticed about XFree86 4 on my DESKTOP computer, which is
equipped with a Matrox G400 32MB, is that it gets the resolutions
automatically from the DDC signal from the monitor. But if I want to add
"weird" resolutions (like the ones needed in certain console emulator
programs) to the configuration file, these are ignored. Maybe I should
force these resolutions somehow. Because for both my laptop and desktop,
I'm CERTAIN that these resolutions are possible. They WERE possible in
both Windows and Xfree86 3.x

What's going on here? Please help.
