Recommend DAT Tape Drives?

Recommend DAT Tape Drives?

Post by Lee Hollingwor » Thu, 04 May 1995 04:00:00

I have read the relevant HOWTO's etc., but would appreciate details
from those using Linux & DAT tape drives as to what hardware works.

We wish to set up a Linux server for a small UNIX lab, and want to
use a 2Gb DAT tape backup device.

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what works.

I have a Sony SDT4000 that works ok on my Linux box, other than the
fact that I have had troubles reading tapes written on other machines.
I think that I just found the source of my problem in an earlier post
with the subject "Re: (Q) Compatibility between Linux and SUN 8mm tapes"

The drive works just fine on HP Series 700 machines and is a bit faster
than the HP DAT drive that I use at work.

1. DAT TAPE DRIVES: Wangtek can't read HP DAT tapes

I have both:
WANGTEK   Model: 6130-HS           Rev: 4G16
HP        Model: C1533A            Rev: 9503

Neither unit can read tapes created by the other machine. Is there a way
to create tapes that can be read by both machines?

I use a program called TAPEDISK in DOS and Windows. Tapes created on
either machine are readable by the other.

BTW, is there a program similar to DOS TAPEDISK in the UNIX world?
TAPEDISK makes a tape drive appear to be one large harddisk.
