Parallel Port Zip drive with slackware?

Parallel Port Zip drive with slackware?

Post by Jim Kinte » Thu, 21 Aug 1997 04:00:00

I am a long standing newbie in the linux world. Please help me with a
simple question. I have a linux machine running slackware 2.0 (the specific
release number I'm not sure of right now and the machine isn't hooked up).
I want to use a Parallel Port Zip drive to transfer a large text file from
a WindowsNT machine to the linux box. Is there a driver for slackware? I
read in this newsgroup that there is one for RedHat. Thanks in advance for
any help.

This isn't a slackware/redhat issue, it's just a kernel issue.  And yes,
there is support for it, since about 1.3.50 or so. Get a suffuciently new
kernel, recompile with support for scsi, scsi disk, and the iomega zip will
show up as one of the low level scsi drivers.  there's also a howto under
sunstie.unc.edu/LDP

This is a major point of confusion for people not well-versed in Linux.
Slackware and RedHat are two different Linux distributions, not two
different operating systems.

Slackware, RedHat, Debian and any other Linux distributions contain the
SAME SOFTWARE. They all use the same source code for the programs, so
all the programs will have the same capabilities. They use the same
kernel source, so they all have the same kernel drivers available to
them.

The major differences between distributions is in the way they install,
and in the amount of "window dressing" they provide. RedHat provides you
with a canned, fully operational environment, while Slackware provides
you with a bare bones environment that the operator is supposed to set
up according to the desired use of the system.

The answer to your question is yes. As long as the kernel has the
driver, it doesn't matter which distribution you use. Read the Zip
mini-HOWTO.

I'm using Slackware 3.0 so I don't know about your distribution, but on
mine there was no conf.modules file.  If you have the same problem read
the modules HOWTO or try this.  Make the file /etc/conf.modules and add
the line

options ppa ppa_base=0x378

Assuming the cable is attached to the port with that address (lpt1).  Oh
yeah don't compile with printer support into the kernel, make it a
module.  You may need to type

rmmod lp
modprobe ppa

And above all listen to Bruce's advice and don't forget to plug it in
(boy that part had me stumpped, the cable had detached form the
mother-board during shipping).

1. zip drive on second parallel port:

Got a question about my zip drive on a second parallel port. How does
one get the damn thing to get noticed? When I first installed my Red Hat
5.1 os and asked my if I had any scssi adapters, I said yes and clicked
on the zip ppa option. Linux was not able to detect the thind and I've
tried to build a driver for it but to no avail. I probably don't know
what I'm doing hun. Typical.
