This Adaptec SCSI bug

Post by Mike » Tue, 18 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Well, after reading a few more posts, and evaluating my situation, I
guess this Adaptec bug (10418 on Bugzilla) may be my problem. Assuming
it is, can anyone recommend a good SCSI card to purchase for this
server of mine, which definitely runs under Linux? I need something
with an Ultra2/LVD connector...

cheers,
mike

Before you buy.

Don't buy the Tekram DC-390U2W.  Nothing against this card but I bought it
in the hope that the Linux problem was Adaptec-dependant.  It isn't.  The
Tekram driver doesn't load either - or rather, the NCR driver which this
Tekram card uses doesn't load.

And having said that, I should add that that is my experience on this
Fujitsu H532i Team Server machine I have here.  It probably works fine on
the rock-stable no-name machine I put together from components.  <sigh>
I'll be testing that hypothesis as soon as I have got sendmail working on
our new server and can decommission the old one.

James

PS your other alternative, Mike, is to move over to FreeBSD.  Rock solid,
easy as 3.147..., and works a dream with both the Adaptec and the Tekram.
In addition it is as cheap as Linux, has a 15 year longer development
history and a dedicated corps of helpful users when you get stuck.

Hmm. The DC-390U2W runs fine here! SCSI-Tape, -Disk and -CDROM. Never
had a problem. The only annoying thing is that it is kinda slow on
scanning the bus at the boot stage.

BTW, I run the 390 with the NCDR53C8XX-driver under Linux 2.2.16 .

I have an Adaptec AHA 2940 U2W.  It has been flawless in all my distro's
(Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, Corel).  The drivers for this card are
included in all the recent releases.

1. Adaptec SCSI problem (possible bug)

I have a 2940 U2W Adapter SCSI with 2 devices (HDD,CD)
by the moment I use Red Hat 6.0 (with kernel 2.2.5)
and it detects everything even at installation time.

I compiled kernel 2.2.9, with aic7xxx support and I
was great, all devices detected....

but when I tried to compile the kernel 2.2.10 with the
same configuation (also with aic7xxx support), I did
compile it without problem....but when I rebooted none
of my SCSI devices were detected, although my SCSI
card was detected.
I tried with 2.2.11... 2.2.13 and the same........

then I got Mandrake 6.1(with kernel 2.2.13), and I
wanted to upgrade...so I installed...I boot from the
SCSI CD, it detected the SCSI card...but when it asked
my for the media it was unable to detect my SCSI
CD....I also tried with RH 6.1 and Mandrake 7.0
Beta....with no success.

what happen to the kernels 2.2.10 and higher is the a
bug, how can I solve it??

Thanks in advance
