SCSI Magnto-Optical Disk formatting

SCSI Magnto-Optical Disk formatting

Post by Peter Van Ost » Sat, 13 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

I have connected an external SCSI-MO to my Linux-system (Linux 2.0.0
kernel, Slackware 3.0)

I can mount msdos formatted MO's without any problem, but I want to
format an MO for the native Linux filesystem (ext2).
When I try to use fdisk on an MO (previously formateed on Mac or
unformatted) I get the following error message when I try to mount it as

mount -t ext2 /dev/sdd1 /mnt

mount: wrong fs type or bad superblock on /dev/sdd

formatting and using it on a Mac gives no problem.

e2fsck could not fix the problem.

What am I doing wrong ?

Hello Peter,

did you run fdisk /dev/sdd and mke2fs /dev/sdd1 before?

SCSI Magnto-Optical Disk formatting

Hello,

Oops, thank you for the message, it seems that I forgot the mke2fs after the fdisk.

It had been a long time since I last formatted any Linux-disk by hand.

Everything works fine now, the Magneto Optical works like a charm:

Here is the command sequence to format it (login as root first):

fdisk /dev/sdd  (I have quite al lot of SCSI-devices (7) on the Adaptec 2940 controller)
p               (print the partition table to see whether it has been formatted already)
(d              (if necessary to remove a partition, repeat for more)
1)
n
p               (create a new primary partition)
1               (partition number)
1               (start)
127             (end)

w               (write the information to the disk and quit fdisk)

The Linux-partition is now created, ready to format as a ext2 native Linux filesystem

mke2fs /dev/sdd1        (creates an ext2 partition)

After this the MO is ready to mount.

mount -t ext2 /dev/sdd1 /mnt    (first create /mnt - mkdir /mnt)

1. 1024 .vs. 512 optical disk format

We recently hooked-up a Mountain Optech CS-1000 optical disk to our SUN
Sparc-20 system and attempted to use a 1024 byte CD. We
couldn't read the CD and subsequently we found out SUN doesn't support the
1024 byte media. Does anyone know if there's a shareware routine which will
allow us to get around this problem.

Thanks
