have you checked comp.os.linux.x? i have posted a couple of messages regarding this problem. the bottom line:
1) get the trident xserver from the XSuSE group
http://www.suse.de/XSuSE/XSuSE_E.html
the right severs will solve a lot of problems. they also have
updated configuration programs. if your card isn't listed then try

2) hand-craft your XF86Config. you'll need to consult your monitor's
manual and the linux video-timings mini-howto.
if you have a jaton card: hunt thru their site (http://www.jaton.com)
for the proper hync frequencies for your video timings.
