Looking for the "right" AGP graphics card for RedHat 6.1

Post by Ken Rossma » Sat, 11 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I am looking for the "right" AGP graphics card to use with RedHat 6.1...
I'm looking to do reasonably hi res (1280x1024, perhaps a bit higher) at
full 24-bit color depth.  Maybe some moderate acceleration...  not really
looking for the fastest fanciest card, just a reasonable one that RedHat
already supports out of the box.

I was looking at the Matrox Millenium G200 card for a bit (probably actually
overkill for my purposes, but seems like a nice card).  Can I hear from folks
who are using this card with RedHat 6.1?  Did you have to mess around with it
at all to make it work, or did it come right up?

Thanks,

/Ken

I use an ATI Xpert98.  Should be really cheap by now.  8M AGP, I'm running
a homemade 1400x1050 mode on a 20" monitor and have no complaints.  Apparently
weak 3D acceleration on this card, but for 2D stuff it's flawless.  Supported
out of the box for Redhat 5.2 and Mandrake 6.1 which is what i've run.

I've noticed something odd about RH 6.1's support for the Viper 770.
The install all works as expected, X works nicely except for ONE thing.

The cursor in emacs is invisible!

No amount of fudging we did made it come back.  We put it down to
something odd in the distribution and forgot about emacs for that
machine.

Then I installed RH 6.1 on my Viper 550 machine.  The emacs cursor is
there!  Same install options, pretty similar hardware except for the
different Vipers.

Until I see emacs working under RH 6.1 with a Viper 770, I'd avoid one.
It sounds as though it's just a glitch until you realise how much you
depend on emacs (if you refuse to learn vi like me).

Did you have to fuss with the kernel much at all to make this card work,
or did it come right up with stock support?  (and remember, this is RedHat
6.1 I'm talking about).

I can't say what the "best" card would be but you could try looking at
http://www.xfree86.org and checking what info/caveats they have listed for
the cards you are considering.

As an eg I'm using a generic i740 card. Reading the notes for the driver, I
now know that the card can run diabolically slow in 24bpp modes and there
are limitations in the use of 32bpp modes.

All distros use XFree86 as their X server (unless you've opted for a
commercial X server) so I would say www.XFree86.org is the place to start.

I don't know what you intend to do with your machine but sometimes a
commercial X server is faster with an "average" card than the free X server
with a "fast" card.

Barry.

I have a $60 Phoenix Maxi-Gamer card (Voodoo Banshee with 16MB SGRAM) that I
run at 1920x1280x32bpp at 75Hz and it's supported very well by XF86 3.3.5 .

No video card should *ever* need kernel changes to work.

Seconded.  No fudging required.  I also like this card 'cause it doesn't
use a fan, and so doesn't crowd out the first PCI slot.
