Need guidance with Scanner type

Post by Peter Hil » Thu, 24 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Hi all

I know I need a scanner with a SCSI interface to use it with Linux  but
other than that I don't know what else to look for. I am going to use it
with either an Adaptec 1542 or a Future Domain 950 or a Tekram 390U.

I am considering either a UMAX 1220S or a Mustek Scanexpresss 12000SP.
Does anyone have any comments about either, or any recommendations ?

I suspect that there is very little to choose between the UMAX or Mustek
or any  other scanner at this price (100 - 150), am    right ?

TIA -

Peter

I have the umax.  Works with SANE and an Adaptec card.  Big software
limitation: no options to scan something smaller than the full A4.
Otherwise it's fine.

BTW - the so-called SCSI card supplied is useless.  And the windoze software
doesn't work - not even after a long call to tech support.  Basically the
s/w has a fixed menu of ioports, and none of them work (Linux autodetects
the correct ones, of course).

we got an old HP IIc and it works off a mylex bt958 with xvscan
softwarewise. No problem scanning smaller than A4.

I have an Epson GT-7000 running perfectly with xscanimage and SANE

Thanks for the comments. I have found some documentation that says that
the Mustek scanners are not supported anyway so .....

Its a pity about the Umax with the other OS software, as my sister was
hoping to borrow it occasionally, and no, before anyone says it, she
runs the other sw and can't change for a number of reasons, however
there's always hope ....

I'll have a look at prices at a couple of places and see what's
available.

Thanks again - Peter.

Might work for her - probably depends on her other hardware (my ISDN
card doesn't work under windoze either).  If you get it, try in on her
machine first, so you can give tech support a bollocking if it doesn't work.

I have a Umax 1220S on a TekRam 390U myself (plus a cdr and DAT tape on the
same scsi chain, disks are on another scsi controller).  Other than having to
get a db50 to db25 cable for the scanner, everything works great.  Note you may
have to go looking for a 390U, the places I've bought in the past (notably
comp-u-plus) only feature the 390F, which has a wide 68 pin external connector,
which means more of a special cable.  Also, the scanner needs to be the last of
the chain, due to having only a db25 connector.  I also wouldn't put ultra
disks on a scsi chain with a scanner, since I strongly doubt what passes for
termination on the scanner is active termination.

Hmm, with xscanimage at least, you can set the size of the scan.  I've set my
for US letter size.

I have a Mustek ScaExpress 6000SP which works fine with a
Side 2930U  PCI SCSI Adapter.

: I have a Mustek ScaExpress 6000SP which works fine with a
: Side 2930U  PCI SCSI Adapter.

I have a Mustek 12000SP (sadly running under W95) which has produced
excellent results. I have only used it with the (brain dead) DTC card it was
supplied with. I haven't used it on any of the Linux boxes here as I don't
have any spare scsi ports (it's amazing how many HDD's you can get in a full
tower!) but will do eventually as I have acquired some more scsi cards.

However, I have heard that it doesn't implement the scsi disconnect function
which implies (does it?) that it will hog the scsi bus and slow the system
down somewhat.

1. Standardizing on a single platform; need guidance

Hi,

My organization has recently decided that we need to standardize on a
single platform for all of our services, and we are torn between whether
to standardize on NT (2000) or some flavor of UNIX (probably Solaris). I'd
be interested in hearing from advocates of either platform as to what
tools would be best suited to support the following:

=       Relational-database driven web site that pulls 70-90% of page
        content from the database.

=       FreeDrive/X-drive style web application written in PHP that will
eventually support approximately 200,000 users with modest
diskspace quotas (between 10MB - 40MB per user).

=       Suite of tools for creating and managing a database-driven store
        with multiple vendors.

=       Firewall software that scans traffic going through certain ports
for workstation-OS viruses (at least Windows and Macintosh).

=       Load balancing for web services.

=       Seperate machines to handle database services and mass storage.

Thanks in advance for your responses,

Andrew
