Modem (Rockwell 56.6 PCI data/fax) probs

Post by Dave Rodgma » Sun, 10 Jan 1999 04:00:00

The modem appears to be completely dead. I have tried echoing commands to
/dev/modem and /dev/cua3, but nothing happens. It works fine under
Windows... albeit with a terrible ping. Does anyone know if I've been sold a
rebranded winmodem, or maybe have some suggestions?

TIA

Dave

You probably have a Winmodem.  The only PCI 56K hardware modem I know of
has a Lucent chipset.  Rockwell only makes chips- not finished modems.  Do
you know the manufacturer or do you have any identifying numbers?

I seem to be having the same problems.  Mine came with a compaq 5140
computer.  It says in the hardware profile that it is a Rockwell HCF 56k
Data/Fax modem.  There probably isn't a way to fix it, except get a
non-winmodem, or use an old ISA 14.4 or 28.8 modem you may have lying around
the house.

Modem (Rockwell 56.6 PCI data/fax) probs

I too was looking for a PCI V.90 modem.  What I found at the local CompUSA and
others were all Winmodem type modems.  The box may or may not indicate whether
you must have windows to run it.

In one case, I bought one that said it was Windows compatible and still found
that it wouldn't work.  When I called the technical support hotline, I was
transferred to a tech who knew about the problem and was told that they only
support Windows.

During a discussion on this news group, someone had located a new modem
announcement from MultiTech that looked like it may be usable.  Someone had
E-mailed the company and received a response.  See posting under

I hope someone could explain this to me.

A  machine that has been running just perfect started spit out this error
recently so often for no apparent reason. When this happens, only fix I
have found is reboot. Absolutely Nothing works. I have tried to upgrade
the kernel to 2.0.36 with no luck. It is currently running with 2.0.33.

Thanks in advance.

He probably does, but the Multitech MultiModemZPX-PCI (Model number
MT5634ZPX-PCI) is stated to work under Linux, as one user posted success
in this group and the company web page and a specific reply to my
inquiries

indicate that it functions as a regular modem and is operating system
independent.

Thank you for your web page.  Very nice.

Hi,

After a quick glance at the code, it appears that it may be failing to load
the C runtime shared library to processs your ELF format executable.

I would force an fsck on all your file systems looking for corruption,
if necessary, using the emergency boot floppies and also make sure that
you have all your shared runtime libraries.

Right. This is a Rockwell HCF modem (don't know the actual ID string) .
Junk it.

HCF modems ARE softmodems
