Modem: Sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't

Post by Jim » Thu, 07 Sep 2000 19:46:16

My CTX EZ-Book 800 laptop is running RedHat 6.1. The main modem is
software based so I use a Viking 56K PCMCIA modem instead. I've got
everything I can think of set so that I can hear the modem dial out but
that only works about 10% of the time. The modem itself works fine and
this isn't really a big deal. Just the same, I'd be interested in
knowing whether or not there is something I might do about it or if
anyone's run into this before. Thanks.

Modem: Sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't

Hi Jim,

do you have a documentation for your modem? If yes, check modem commands
for the modem.
Normaly to disable sound on dial up you can use ATM0L0 and to switch modem
speaker to loud you
can use ATM3L3 or something like that. TO be sure read modem commands
documentation, they
should point this there. After you will figure out commands you can add
them in you initiation
string and it should works after that. ( I guess that some software which
you run can disable speaker
- this why you sometimes hear sound and sometimes not)

1. Telnet, FTP ... sometimes work, sometimes they don't!

Hi all,

I have a weird problem. I have a Linux box with Mandrake 7.2 which I use a
home and work. When I am at work I can Telnet to that box by IP
192.168.0.250 from a client 192.168.0.1 (WinNT 4.0 Svr). When I am at home
I cannot connect to the Linux box from a client (WinNT 4.0 Wkst) although
it has the same IP address as one of our in-house servers has
(192.168.0.1). The only difference is the workgroup name which is GRUPEHJF
at work and TESTLOCAL at home. Anyone has an idea or knows any settings I
may not have set correctly or services I didn't start ... I use middle
security level on Mandrake ....

Help is really appreciated ...

Thanks, Marc
