remote start PC ?

Post by Holger Zirnste » Thu, 01 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I have the following problem:

I want to power on a pc (Linux installed) remotely without using the ON/OFF
power switch. I don't know any product that can accomplish that.
I'm sure that there exists such a thing, but I don't know any producer to
contact.
If someone has experience in solving this problem, maybe he wants to share
his wisdom.

In /etc/inittab (Slackware) there are some entries pertaining to powerfaillure,
perhaps you can play with that...

I started a project with a friend of mine to make a card that does that
exactely (including some other stuff). I am supposed to write the
software (linux first, then maybe dos) and he will design the hardware.
The only problem seems to be that he doenn't have a whole lot of time...
If you want to put some pressuse on him: his mail address is

There exists such a device that will start a computer
when it receives a signal from another modem.
I don't know the brand or what its called offhand,
but I do have the catalog around here somewhere....

[about 10 minutes later...]

Dammit! I can't find it!
Oh well, I'll post if I do figure out where I saw it.

See ya in the newsgroups.

Not sure if I understand your question Holger, but I think you are perhaps
looking for a device like 'Remote Power On/Off' manufactured by a company
named Server Technology Inc. I have no affiliation with this company except
as a user of their product. I purchased mine from a mail order computer
hardware/software company. Try a search on those names, or mail me if you need
further info.

Alternatively, hook up any old modem, and get the RI (ring indicate) pin
to drive a relay to switch on the power. I have seen this solution in a
large insurance form where tey use it to poll pc-s for data at night.
This way the pc doesn't have to be left on.

my 0.02 $
hope this helps,
