How can I get linux to reconize more than 16 MBytes on a Compac
Prosignia 300 . The motherboard has 16 Megs built in. + 2 banks of 8 MBytes

Compaq follows the letter of the law in the memory detection scheme;
originally, the AT BIOS spec only allowed for detection of 16 megs.  In
the register, however, are enough bits to describe up to 64 megs; Compaq
just decided to follow the letter of the law in this regard, especially
when EISA calls would render the true amount of memory present.  

To get around this, in your lilo boot arguments (or whatever loading
scheme you use), please just include mem=xxM and replace your xx's with
your true memory amount, in megabytes.  For instance, I have a 300 at
work with 48 megs; I append mem=48M to my boot choice and it works
great.  Also, if you just want to try it before you put it in your
lilo.conf file, and you're using lilo to boot linux, you can just type
the name of the kernel image you're booting at the lilo prompt and add
the mem=xxM at the end; for me, it would be
linux mem=48M
and it should detect your memory.
