are there any ne2000 - davicom dm9008 incompatibilities?

Post by p.. » Fri, 23 Jun 2006 22:25:19

Hi everybody --

We are trying to bring up a davicom dm9008 (advertised as ne2000
compatible) ethernet controller and having no luck at all. One big
problem is that the MAC addr in the dm9008 keeps changing, on its own
as it seems.

Has anyone been bitten by INcompatibilities between the ne2000 and
dm9008? Can you share what those niggling incompatibilities might be?

Thanks!

The Ethernet Howto http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO-2.html has a
rather long chapter (2.6) about problems with NE2000 and clones. However
dm9008 or any changing mac addresses does not seem to be mentioned there.
Maybe you should add a few more problems to the list :-). In my
experience, many NE2000 clones are crap. However, those experiences are
limited to NE2000 ISA cards.

On 22 Jun 2006, in the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.hardware, in article

[compton ~]$ etherwhois DAVICOM

Looking at google, that seems to be an ISA PnP card that uses the 'ne'
driver, so your modules configuration file (/etc/conf.modules (2.2.x and
older kernels, /etc/modules.conf in 2.4.x and newer) should be set up
per the Ethernet-HOWTO for an NE2000 ISA card. See also the section on
"Problems with NE1000 / NE2000 cards (and clones)" (section 2.6).  A
possible problem is that Plug-and-Pray crap. See section 2.9.1 of the
same HOWTO.

Your best solution may be to toss the card and get ANYTHING else.

1. NE2000 (ISA) and PCMCIA Adapter Incompatibility

I am having a strange problem trying to get a PCMCIA to ISA adapter
(swapbox) to work with an NE2000 ISA card.  I have the same problem with two
different PCMCIA to ISA adapters (both work in other systems, e.g., with Win
2000), and both work in Linux (with virtually any version of PCMCIA package)
as long as I don't have an NE2000 ISA network card plugged in.

If they are both plugged in, the system hangs (freezes) shortly after (<.5
seconds) PCMCIA starts (100% repeatable).  I have been trying to exclude
resources in /etc/pcmcia/conf.options, especially memory ranges and IRQs,
but no matter how draconian I make the excludes, it still hangs.

The NE2000 cards are set up with IRQs 5 and 10 and I/O addresses 0x300 and
0x220 (other values make no difference).  The Boot ROM on the cards is
disabled by the setup utility.  I am suspicious that it is interacting,
nonetheless.

I have tried this in a Pentium-class PCI/ISA system and now in a very old
486 ISA-only system, and the results are the same.

It is hard to debug since it is a lockup.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.
