VX Pro Motherboard With IBM 6x86 P200+ CPU

Hi Linuxers,

I am just wondering if it worths the effort to replace my 486DX2/66
motherboard with the above motherboard and CPU to run Linux.  Can
someone please give some advice regarding this matter?

No. The VX chipset is crippled in comparison to the HX. I am not
familiar with the Cyrix/IBM chips, but for the mainboard I would suggest
an Asus P55-T2P4. It will cache 512Mb main memory and support the
(Socket 7) processor of your choice.

I know of no problems inherent in using Cyrix CPUs and Linux.

The Asus P55T2P4 board that you recommend _is_ a good choice, but the Abit
IT5H is said to be more stable at 75-83MHz.

I would agree with that .. and add the Supermicro P5XTRA as another robust MB
at the 75Mhz bus speed needed by the P200+.

the VX Pro chipset is a really, REALLY bad chipset. See

http://web2.superb.net/motherboard/

and

http://sysdoc.pair.com/

these guys can recommend some REAL hardware for you. the cyrix/ibm chip
is okay, but the motherboard HAS to go.

(maybe AMD-K6 and AMD-640 chipset or VIA VP2/97)

1. Cyrix P200+ with a DFI G586-VPS Pro Motherboard

Hi:

I am considering building a Linux system with the
        following motherboard and processor combination:

        motherboard:    DFI G586-VPS Pro

I have downloaded from their WEB site at
                http://www.dfiusa.com  their one page technical
information sheet which lists, among many other
details, the chipset that the board uses:

                        VLSI Lynx Chipset
                        VL82C541 system controller
VL82C543 ISA controller (PCI to ISA, DMA
                                and interrupt controller)

The board is rated for pentium processors through
200 MHz and Cyrix processors through the P200+

        processor:      Cyrix P200+

The Cyrix WEB site at http://www.cyrix.com lists the
above motherboard on their Cyrix 6x86 Processor
Motherboard Compatibility List as compatible with a
wide range of operating systems, Unix included. They
consider the motherboard to be compatible with their
Cyrix P200+ processor based upon their test results.

        My Questions:

                1.      Is anyone out there using this combination
                        with Linux?

                2.      If so, would you be willing to post your
                        opinions?

I am obviously quite interested in reading your opinions about
this motherboard/processor combination prior to making a purchase
        decision.

Thanks,
Neal Byington
