: Greetings!
: I'm in a situation here... Got my choice of a Trident 9680 or a Cirrus
: 5430 video card. Both are PCI, both have 2 megs.
: They're both supported under Win/NT 4.0.. Here's the rub - Which is the
: better card under X-free86? Are there problems with either of them? I'd be
: after 800x600x256, will these cards handle this mode under X?
Can't comment on the CL5430, but I've used the Trident 9680.
First caveat, the 9680 is *not* supported by 3.1.2, but it works just
fine with the beta X-Free servers, 3.1.2G for example. However, I've
found that this card is pretty slow under XFree86, while using a
commercial X server such as X-Accel really made the card fly. This
surprised me as I had though that the card pretty much sucked until I saw
how well it worked under acceleration... even though I've moved to an
S3-968 VRAM card, I havn't thrown away the old Trident - never know when
it may come in handy. :-)
My Trident came with 1 meg of RAM which supported 1024x768/8bpp,
so supporting 800x600/8bpp is a given. If you up the card memory, or use
640x480/16/24bpp, I'm honestly not certain if it will support the higher
color depths with XFree, but it does with X-Accel. So, supporting 8bpp
at standard resolutions is a given. Good luck!
