Trident 9680 Video Card vs. Cirrus Login 5430 Video Card

Post by Heath Doa » Tue, 08 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Greetings!

I'm in a situation here...  Got my choice of a Trident 9680 or a Cirrus
5430 video card.  Both are PCI, both have 2 megs.

They're both supported under Win/NT 4.0..  Here's the rub - Which is the
better card under X-free86?  Are there problems with either of them?  I'd be
after 800x600x256, will these cards handle this mode under X?

    Thanks!

Can't comment on the CL5430, but I've used the Trident 9680.
First caveat, the 9680 is *not* supported by 3.1.2, but it works just
fine with the beta X-Free servers, 3.1.2G for example.  However, I've
found that this card is pretty slow under XFree86, while using a
commercial X server such as X-Accel really made the card fly.  This
surprised me as I had though that the card pretty much sucked until I saw
how well it worked under acceleration... even though I've moved to an
S3-968 VRAM card, I havn't thrown away the old Trident - never know when
it may come in handy. :-)

My Trident came with 1 meg of RAM which supported 1024x768/8bpp,
so supporting 800x600/8bpp is a given.  If you up the card memory, or use
640x480/16/24bpp, I'm honestly not certain if it will support the higher
color depths with XFree, but it does with X-Accel.  So, supporting 8bpp
at standard resolutions is a given.  Good luck!

Well, I'm only familliar with the Trident series of cards, and I can
tell you about the 9680.  Currently, it is only supported in the beta
servers and is only supported in non-accelerated modes.  In other words,
with the betas it will run, but takes advantage of very little of the
card.

Unfortunately, I'm not familliar with the Cirrus Logic cards, so I can't
say for sure how the support for it is.  My guess, however, would be
that it is supported.

Well the Trident 9680 is not supported, there is seemingly no support
from the Trident 94xx and upwards, becage of the new TGUI chip.  I've
just recently installed Linux, but I couldn't manage to get it to work
with the XFree86 server I'm looking for the drivers right now, so if
somebody runs across them tell me the location

Take a look at ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/Linux/util/X11/Server/XFree86/

Here you can find the latest beta of the XFree86 server, which suppurts
Trident 9440/9660/9680 cards.

The new Trident chips are supported in the latest beta. 3.1.2G . Get it.
It's very stable. And works flawlessly with my Trident 9440TGUIPCIAGI :)

What about ftp.xfree86.org?  did you bother to look there?  Get yourself
a copy of 3.1.2G and you'll be much happier.

1. Does a TRIDENT 9680 or a S3 Vision864 video card work?

I just ordered a new PC that comes with a TRIDENT 9680 2MB video card.
I can't find mention of that card in any of the Linux XFree86 docs.

Can someone tell me if it's supported in the current or beta
release of XFree86?

If not, I have my eye on a:
"64-Bit S3 Vision864 4MB PCI Graphics Accelerator DEC's Model #PCXAG-AL"

I see the 864 chipset is supported.  Can anyone tell me how well
it works?    Thanks in advance,
