Hi all;

I am interested in a motherboard with the folowing;

865 chipset or higher, 800 mhz FSB, DDR 400, with that Hyper Threading

What would you advice?

You won't find a MB with a 800MHz FSB. 200Mhz quad pumped, yes.
Try pricewatch.

Why the heck is this cross posted into an AMD group anyway?

There is only 3 chipsets actually supporting 800mhz FSB, Dual Channel DDR400
and
hyper threading. My advice to you is if you have too much money to spend go
for
875 chipset based Main board such as those from Asus or Gigabyte typically
between
$275 and more . If you are on tight budge go for Sis648FX based mainboard
also from
Asus and Giga, Gigabyte sis648FX based board is available at $130 from
www.msy.com.au
and in the $190 to $270 price bracket you can select Gigabyte PE1000 or
PE1000Pro or
Asus base board. My advice would be to go for Sis648FX based mainboard.

Hi All;

Thanks for your replies, I am interested in the 875 chipset, but
perferr not to have the sata. Would that allow more choices or is sata
standard on all these boards...?

1. 350 MHz vs 400 MHz PII

I'm building a Linux machine and decided to step up to a 400 MHz PII
instead of a 350 MHz even though the price (of the CPU) went from $334
to $483 . . I feel it will be a good long-term move since I plan to
implement software RAID on an array of Ultra2 SCSIs . . so the extra
'crankage' will be welcome.  An even clock multiple of 4x made good
sense to me as well . . I'm putting in 128MB of 8ns ECC.

I have also invested in the Supermicro SC750-A server case . . which
can accomodate up to nine cooling fans . . four of which are for the
HDDs (the four SCSIs in my NT workstation are cooled by the front bay
covers being removed . . letting the air stream over them).  This
SC750 is a unit which I can definitly grow into . .

Any suggestions on a Ultra2 SCSI controller (hope we're not getting
too far off topic) . . I have it narrowed down to the Adaptec 2940U2W
or the Symbios 2951U.  I know the Adaptec is almost 400 bucks!!  but
seems to have more configuration options.  Will probably go with
Viking IIs or perhaps even 'cudas.
