Adaptec AIC-7770 difficulties.

Post by bo.. » Fri, 30 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I have a 486DX2/66 EISA at work, and have tried kernels from 1.1.18 to 1.2.8 on it
with no luck.  It uses an Adaptec AIC-7770 controller (the same chip as on the
AHA274x series).  The kernel will correctly identify the controller, but when it
attempts to check the devices, I get bus timeouts and a hang.  Here is the boot
time output:

aha274x: extended translation disabled
AHA274X AT EISA SLOT 9
    irq 10
    bus release time 60 bclks
    data fifo threshold 100%
    SCSI CHANNEL A
        scsi id 7
        scsi bus parity check enabled
        scsi selection timeout 256ms
scsi bus reset at power-on enabled
        scsi bus termination disabled
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x (EISA/VL-bus -> Fast SCSI) 1.28/1.11/1.29
scsi : 1 host
scsi : aborting command due to timeout: pid 0, scsi 0, id 0, lun 0, 0x00 00 00 00 00 00

All of the diagnostic values match what is configured with the EISA SCU.  (Well,
the ones which I can find in the SCU.  That excludes the bus termination setting.)
I've checked and double-checked the cabling and termination.  I've been using the
system with Windoze for a year now, so I can more or less rule out catastrophic
hardware problems.

I appreciate any insight you might be able to shed on this problem.  I have been
attempting to evangelize Linux in the workplace (including getting the Caldera
preview for Netware access.)  Needless to say, this type of installation problems
aren't helping my cause.

Thank you,
Mike Nygard

1. Adaptec EISA AIC-7770 HELP!

I have exactly the same problem with a 486 EISA Board. I tried other
Linux Distribution (the german LST 1.8 and Slackware 2.0.0) with the result,
that the SCSI host adapter was completely ignored by the bootdisk (SCSI
hosts: 0).

So if anyone has an idea please help!

Gerhard
