ATI Radeon 9700 PRO & Red Hat Linux 7.2?

ATI Radeon 9700 PRO & Red Hat Linux 7.2?

Post by ANT.. » Wed, 10 Sep 2003 04:01:27

Is there anything I should know if I were to switch from a GeForce4
Ti 4200 (Leadtek) to an ATI Radeon 9700 PRO video card? Do I understand
that ATI now fully supports this model in Linux, especially on an old
operating system? I also heard 9800 isn't fully supported yet and is
very expensive, so I am more geared to 9700.

I use my box as a workstation and play games like Q3A and its mods,
RTCW, RTCW:ET, etc. I also dualboot with Windows XP for other
applications and games. You can see my system setup at
http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/computers.txt (primary
computer). I also use TV in stuff too so I might get an All-In-Wonder
card OR get a separate capture card so I don't have to keep buying a
new video card with video in. I also do watch stuff on TV (video out)
like DVD movies.

Any feedbacks are welcomed. Thank you in advance. :)

Check the ATI's web page.  I am reasonably sure that whatever X server is
included with RH 7.2 (probably XF86 4.0.3 or 4.1) will not support that
card by default, but the binaries distributed by ATI may work with those
versions.  If you find you need a newer X server you should probably just
upgrade the distribution, though.

1. Any Succesful Installs ATI Radeon 9700 pro driver from ATI.

I have downloaded, and installed the drivers provided by ATI for the radeon
9700 pro. I have the AGP card. I havent been able to get the drivers and X
to work. the only warning i get when installing is an error message that
complains about 2D and OpenGL for 2D. Why would ATI release drivers that do
not work with 2D? also im running 4.2.0 Xserver, and downloaded the
appropropriate ATI driver for that version of X.
