TEAC PD-518E ATAPI PD-CD works !

Post by Achim Linde » Thu, 11 Jun 1998 04:00:00

To whom it may concern:

This morning, i got a TEAC PD-518E (ATAPI CDROM and phasechanger on
different LUNs) running with a 2.0.33 kernel. The trick is, to
initialize the drive using the DOS-driver. Then a kernel with SCSI
emulation support has to be booted with loadlin. (DOS initialization and
warm boot wont do.) The rest can be looked up in the Optical Disk
Howto.
Many thanks to the authors of the relevant linux drivers and readme
files and to Yoshiyuki Hamato, whose posting - although the comments
were in Japanese - put me on the right track.

Have fun !

By the way, I recommend to prefer a SCSI PD. The SCSI PD drives are
supported by the standard SCSI driver, which is presumably more stable
than the combination of SCSI driver and SCSI emulation layer.

As it turned out, booting DOS isnt necessary. The lilo parameter linux
hda=cdrom works as well. Sounds a bit contraintuitive (at least to me),
since there is no ATAPI CDROM support in the kernel and the CD and PD are
handled as SCSI devices. I failed to notice that there is not only the SCSI
driver and the SCSI emulation layer, but also the IDE support underneath,
which is apparently responsible for the detection of the drive.
