3COM 3c509 (Etherlink III) problems under Debian 2.0.27

Post by David C. Winte » Mon, 21 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I'm having problems with a 3Com Etherlink III (3c509) card on a Debian
system.  I have compiled a custom 2.0.27 kernel, choosing the 3c509 option,
only to receive no kernel messages referencing the kernel on bootup,
followed by the standard

        SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
        SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
        SIOCSIBRDADDR: No such device
        SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
        SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

messages which indicate the system is trying to assign IP address to a
non-existant (from its POV) network card.

The machine itself dual-boots to Linux and NT 4.0.  The card performs
without any problems under NT.  By using DOS floppies and 3Com's Etherlink
III configuration program, I've also determined that the card's Play-and-
Pray "feature" is already disabled.  (Which I sorta knew anyhow: NT 4.0
doesn't support PnP.)  My other dual-boot Debian/NT 4.0 machines, using
3c595 cards, haven't had similar problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

/*
It has been suggested to me that I reinstall Red Hat Linux instead of
Debian--the person doing the suggesting has installed a number of 3c509
cards on RH systems without problems.  I'm a bit skeptical of this, given
that all of the distributions use the same kernel sources (or does Red Hat
make any custom modifications to the kernel sources in its distributions
and I just don't know about it?).

Try the new 3com drivers available at:

Sorry, didn't read the card model right in the previous reply.  The vortex
drivers are for the 59x and 90x cards.  On the etherlink III card I set
up under a 2.0.0 kernel, I had to make sure that I had the PnP configured
for the right media (it was an AUI,TP,BNC card).  I set it up with the
config program sent with the card.
