Looking for Trident 9440 AGI/SMT PCI-video-card setup information.

Post by Tino Driesse » Wed, 29 May 1996 04:00:00

I am a starting Linux-user and I've got problems with setting
up my Trident 9440AGI/SMT PCI-video-card for X.

In the README-files I found that my video-card is not
yet supported but that there is being worked on.

Does anybody know of this working has already been completed
or has anybody some more information for me how te setup this
card.

I've got no technical information of my card.

I would appreciate any help,

Tino Driessen.

The Trident 9440 video cards are supported in the XFree86 3.1.2D and E beta
versions, which are available from ftp.xfree86.org in the directory
/pub/XFree86.  However, these versions *are* beta code and have built-in
expiration dates.

Yup, I know what you need to do.  You need to go to ftp.xfree86.org and
grab the latest beta versions.  You need to get 3.1.2D AND 3.1.2E, thi
is because 3.1.2E is an upgrade from 3.1.2D.  You don't really have to
get 3.1.2E, but 3.1.2D expires on June 1st (I think), so you'll have to
get 3.1.2E to keep working past the end of the week.  Once you have
that, you should be able to use xf86config to set up X for the card.  If
you have any more questions/problems, feel free to e-mail me.

1. XF86Config for Trident 9440-AGI video card?

I have soem problem running XF86 on my PC. I have
a Pentium 75, 16 MB RAM, 850 MB HD on a single IDE.
15" AcerView monitor, IDE/ATAPI CDROM (SONY CDU 55E CD )
Trident 9440-AGI video card via PCI-47(1024 KB memory).

I installed the latest Slackware(V2.2.0 and 1.2.1 Linux
kernel?). I then tried to use "xf86config" to set the
XF86Config for me. Since there is no "Trident 9440-AGI"
chip provided in the data base. I am not sure what X
server I should choose. SO I first chose "SVGA". After
the file is generated, I tried "startx" and got the
following message:

-------------------------
(--) SVGA: Mode "1280x1024" needs hsync freq of 64.25k deleted
(--) SVGA: Mode "1280x1024" needs hsync freq of 78.86k deleted

*** A configured device formed but display modes could not
      be resolved ****

Fatal Sever erro:

     no screen found
xinit: no such file or directory(error 2): unexpected signal 13

----------------------------------------

Later I tried to use "xf86config" but chose Xserver "SVGA16"
and "XF86_S3", and I could get "xstart" working, everything
seemed to be OK except that only 16 colors instead of 256 colors
are supported. I used "xcmap", it only displayed 16 colors. I also
ran another game requiring 256 color support, it couldn't be run.

One more thing strange is that again later I used "xf86config"
to reset XF86Config file and chose "SVGA" server. This time
"startx" worked ok, but it only supports 16 colors.  Does
"xf86config" generate any other files than "XF86Config"?

I would appreciate it if any one here can give me some pointers
regarding the XF86Config setup and/or what problem it is and
how I should solve it.

Thanks.

-Tony
