Problem with IDE HardDisk

Post by LoneWolfDe » Thu, 17 Jun 2004 05:50:02

Hi!
I'm getting a pair of problem with an IDE hard disk. Some files, after
copying are not equal. I've thought that my hd could have some bad sectors,
but badsector doen't find them. Anyway during the normal using, sometimes i
get messages like those one:
status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
error=0x10 {SectorIdNotFound}
Why i get those errors? i can't understand how it could seek ultil the
sector and then say that sector doesn't exist.

Sounds like your disk is dying.  Have you run smartctl -a and/or
ide-smart on the disk to see what the SMART functions report?  smartctl
is in the smartmontools package, which should be on your distro CDs.

The disk is probably dying.  Back up all your data and buy a new disk.

The SectorIdNotFound error message could also indicate a corrupt
filesystem or a filesystem that is larger than the partition it is on.

ISTR a bug in a very early of mkfs for one of the journalling
filesystems that would occasionally create a filesystem slightly larger
than the partition size.  Any attempt to write beyond the end of the
partition resulted in such an error message.

Personally, I'd recommend backing up all data and recreating the
filesystem for the affected partition(s) before declaring the disk dead.

May be time for a new HDD!

Problem with IDE HardDisk

Post by LoneWolfDe » Wed, 30 Jun 2004 05:28:26

I've resolved the problem, looking around in the kernel config options i've
seen one made ad hoc fot my error messages. So, if anyone of you will ever
have the same problem, just compile a new kernel.

Thanks anyway

1. Can a common ide harddisk be used in ultra10 ide interface?

Hi all,

My ultra10, running sol2.6, has a 8G and a 7G ide harddisk.
Now they're almost full. I have a common wdc-15G ide harddisk
at hand, so tried pluging it in. After stop+a, I did a probe-ide
and found system recognized it. Then boot -r. After system came
up, I did a format, but it gave no any information about the new
disk.

Can anyone gives any suggestions?

Thank you.
