Hi,

sometimes i get the following (and horrorfying) message:

Wee .. inode changed from under us. Tell Linus

okay i thought linus is probably not too much interested in my linux 1.3
but yesterday my system stopped and told me:

no free inodes, contact Linus

what does it all mean ????????????????????????????

Linus made some changes, in late 1.3.x as I recall, to the way i-nodes
are handled; the messages that you see are debugging messages for cases
he (at that time) thought couldn't happen.

Very likely, your problems will be fixed by upgrading to a 2.0.x kernel
(be sure to read Documentation/changes first though; some older versions
of various programs break under 2.0.x).

Hope this helps,
Ray

1. VFS: No free inodes - contact Linus

Does anybody have experience with the following (kernel) message:

"VFS: No free inodes - contact Linus"

Why should I contact Linus while I still have plenty of free inodes?

Filesystem           Inodes   IUsed   IFree  %IUsed Mounted on
/dev/sda1            1034168   35982  998186     3%  /
/dev/sdb1            1048576     167 1048409     0%  /mnt/disk2

Kernel: 2.0.27
SCSI Adapter: AIC-7880 Ultra

Thanks,
Danny
