Diamond Stealth 64 S3Trio and screen edges

Post by Robert Sheeh » Sat, 04 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I have two minor problems with my Diamond Stealth 64DRAM (2 megs).  When I
use the extended text mode 132x43 I get an extra line of pixels at the
bottom of the screen.  This line changes as the contents of the screen
change but I can see no logical connection.

The second problem is with X windows.  When I am running at 1024x768 I get
a white line down the right hand edge.  This line is not intense as I have
seen when overdriving the monitor.  It just seems a normal white line of
pixels which shouldn't be there.

Any suggestions?

With respect to problem 2:

I have a #9 GXE64 (S3Trio64 chipset) graphics card that is giving me the same
problem too. This only happens when I run it in 8 bit color mode (at resolutions
of 1024x768 and 1280x1024). In 16 bit color mode (at resolution of 1024x768)
this does not happen. If you can sacrifice the higher resolution (1280x1024)
and just run at 1024x768 (16 bit) you will have no problem. For me I want to
run at 1280x1024. So I am stuck as well.

I found out the line appears for dot-clocks of 80MHz and up.
Learn to ignore it (or buy another card, as I did).
(I heard similar complains dealing with other s3 chips as well)

Good luck,
                                        Rob.

If you use the XF86_S3 X server from XFree86-3.1.2, you will not have
this problem.  The problem existed in the 3.1.1 version of the server
(which is on Slackware 2.3, etc.).

this problem is fixed in XFree86 3.1.2

I have not seen this problem myself nor can I reproduce it.  The only
difference with my card is I run a 4MB PCI version.
