CD not playing audio cd's

Post by Bob Austi » Sun, 09 May 1999 04:00:00

Hello - I have a new mother board PCChips M590 that has on board
audio and Video. I have the audio working and the CD is accessable for
data. I can start the cdplayer (KSCD) and all the functions work except
no audio. I dualboot this system with OS/2  and the CD plays through
just fine. Any ideas ??

Thanks,

Bob - N4CLH

Try 'cat /dev/sndstat' to see whether your sound is set up correctly (read
the sound HOWTOs as well).  Quite likely, you need to reconfigure your
kernel for whatever sound chip your mother board uses.  Get ready to open
up your box and have a look.

A good place to find information on current supported sound devices is
www.linux.org.uk/OSS.  As of kernel versions 2.2.X (perhaps a bit earlier,
but not 2.0.X) OSS has been implemented in the kernel source, with
substantial documentation included.  Good luck.

If it works in OS/2 I would guess that it is a mixer setting which stops
the sound from the CD. Did you try to run any mixer program?

1. Can't play audio CD's with CD Player apps -- Creative CD820E

I have a Creative Labs CD820E and am not able to play audio cd's with any CD
players for Linux.  I am able to use the buttons on the front of the drive
(play and stop) to play CDs -- I'd like to use the features of audio CD apps
though.  Any time i stick a disc in and start up workbone or xmcd I get
these messages ont eh console:

hdd: irq timeout: status=0xd0
hdd: ATAPI reset complete
hdd: media changed

these messages keep appearing for around a minute, and the light on the
CDROM drive turns off.
/dev/hdd has the right permissions, and i have /dev/cdrom linking to
/dev/hdd.  I am able to mount and read data CD's.  QuickCD in win95 lets me
play audio cd's, so I know the drive is capable of playing audio.  Any
ideas?  Thanks.
