Three reasons to try it without bothering to ask:
1. It's sitting in the closet doing you no good.
2. Linux doesn't cost much to buy if you don't already have it.
3. You'll learn a lot by working through the problems.
Linux compatibility is going to depend a lot on what the computer's
configuration is, what peripherals it has, and the age of the Linux
distrubution you're using. Without knowing another thing about your
computer other than it is a "Compaq Presario 866", the best advice I can
give you is "Go for it, you've got nothing to lose."
