Large IDE drives with RH 6 and Sun Ultra 10

Post by R. Steven Rainwate » Tue, 16 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I'm trying to install Red Hat 6.0 on a Sun Ultra 10 with
some 13gig IDE hard drives. The problem is that Linux
insists that they are only 8gig drives. I'm installing
using the default Disk Druid program to partition and
format the drives.

I've never had any trouble installing Linux on Intel systems
with large IDE drives so this must be a Sparc-specific
problem of some sort. Am I stuck with this 8gig limit if
I use IDE drives on the Sparc or is there a workaround I can
try? Any help or suggestions appreciated!

I had this problem on an PC (Intel) with a 10 GB drive, so
I don't think it's specific to the Ultra.  The way I got
around it was to use Disk Druid to set up the systems
partitions, then use fdisk after the installation was
completed to add another partition across the 8 GB "threshold".
I don't know if that will work with your Ultra.

Does your Bios recognize above 8 GIG?  Probably a bad question being you are
working on a SUN product but it might be a valid question.

There have been reports of Linux not working well with extra large (greater
than 8.4 Gigabyte) hard-drives. These problems
can usually be solved with the same hdX=cyl, heads, sectors keyword as above.
This is usually a matter of the number of
cylinders the drive is configured with by the manufacturer rather than
storage capacity of the drive.

1. Large IDE-Disks on SUN Ultra 10

"couldn't you just..."

Nope.

Sun reads the IDE parameter block the "old fashioned" way; C/H/S rather
than LBA.

And it "verifies" it before it will let you write the label out.

On other systems, this would be called a bug.
