Problem with Sony CDU-33a proprietary CD-ROM

Hello All:
I am trying to install Redhat 6.0 on a  x486 box and the kernel
cannot find the CD-ROM. I did read the HOW-TO, so when
given the option to autoprobe or specify the location I chose the latter
and entered the IO address and the IRQ, but it still didn't
find the CD-ROM. Here are the details:

OS:                       Redhat 6.0
CD-ROM:         Sony CDU-33a-01
Soundcard:         Soundblaster
Linux Driver:     Sony CDU-31a

The system is currently loaded with dos/win 3.1, so I used the
system.ini file to get the IO address (220) and IRQ (5). I thought
that they were correct because when I boot to dos the machine can read
the cd-rom.  When I try to load the linux Sony CDU-31a
driver and specify the location (I know these cards don't autoprobe) I
get the error message:
"I can't find the device anywhere on your system"
and there are a lot hex numbers in the background. Any suggestions?

look a little further in the win device manager...  IO 220/IRQ 5 is the
address of the sound I/O for the soundblaster...
Should be a SCSI entry in the device manager for the controller part of
the soundblaster card.

Problem with Sony CDU-33a proprietary CD-ROM

I have used this drive with Linux for a number of years and have gone thru
several Redhat releases with it.  However, it came in a kit with a Sound
Machine Pro 16 sound card, not a SoundBlaster card.
Setting this aside you can feed parameters to the kernel at startup as
follows: 'linux  cdu31a=<io-address>,<interrupt>,PAS'.  I suggest you use
'linux cdu31a=0x220,0'   The 0 for interrupt I think means don't use the
interrupt for polling.  Skip the final PAS unless you are using a Pro Audio
Spectrum 16 sound card.
If you load this info with insmode or modprobe the parameters are slightly
different, but the meaning is the same.  You would use
cdu31a_port=0x220  cdu31a_irq=0.
Good luck.

1. Cannot find Sony CDU-33a CD-ROM during installation

Hello,
I've read the FAQ and watched the newsgroups, and I still
have two questions about Slackware Linux from InfoMagic installation.

First, here's my system:
486 DX/2 66 with 16 MB RAM, WD90C33 Paradise video card,
Sony CDU33 CD-ROM, and two WD hard drives:

Drive 1: 540 MB
C: Boot 86MB
/dev/hda2 211 MB
/dev/hda3 210 MB
/dev/hda4 33 MB Swap
(not using Disk Manager)

Drive 2: 850 MB
D: E: F:
(Using Disk Manager)

I am trying to install the Slackware distribution from the InfoMagic
3-CD set, Dec. 94 version.  I created a boot disk using the cdu31a
disk image in the Slackinst directory an rawrite.  I created a root
disk from color144.

First, I'm getting the infamous warnings about the logical/physical
sizes for the /dev/hd4 partition.  Is this anything I should be
concerned about?

Second, I can't see the DOS partitions on my second hard drive.  I
believe this is due to Disk Manager.  It sees it as one large drive
of unknown format.  Is there some way to do this since I need DM to
access the full size of my drive, but I'd also like to see it in Linux?
I've read the eide.txt and tried the suggestions in there, but it
didn't solve this problem or the one in question 1.

Third, after creating my partitions, everything looks good except
for the warnings I spoke about.  I go into setup and format everything
and make the swap space.  When I get to source, it cannot find my
CDROM.  What's going on here?  I'm using the boot disk that allegedly
works with my CD-ROM.
This question is of course, the most serious one.

Thanks for your help,
Bart Conrath
