If the floppy controller is upwards compatible with the Intel controllers,
there shouldn't be any problem.

Well..., the best way would be to just try it out, and see what
happens.

LINUX on Sparc Clone?

I also have a different sparc clone.  Unfortunately this machine won't
boot normal sparc kernels, will this be hopeless to boot SparcLinux?

Machine type: Sun4
Machine Processor: S4000/KAP
Machine name: Solbourne S4000

I only have SunOS4.0.3 and can't locate a newer copy of SunOS that would
work on it (Requires "OS/MP 4.1C") so Linux would be a perfect
substitute.

I have a feeling Linux too will require major hacks :(  Any ideas?

I have used a floppy about two times in the last two years of using
Sun Sparcstations - I always have PCs handy for copying DOS files,
and I don't copy SunOS files to/from floppies.  I don't think you will
miss the floppy drive if it doesn't work.

BTW, the Sparcstations I maintain all run SunOS 4.1.[34], but I have recently
been trying out Sparclinux on a spare SLC, netbooting.  It does actually
work!!  And I like the virtual consoles and text screen driver.  With
SunOS the text screen is almost unusable.

I have PCs and Workstations of all kinds at work.
However, the Sparc in question is at home and I don't have a PC
(really!).
Maybe it's time to buy one...  :-)

The SPARC/Linux home page at:

http://www.geog.ubc.ca/sparclinux.html

has information on how to join the mailing lists which would be a much
better place to pose this question.

How about an Opus 500 (Sparc clone).  When I try to net boot, it loads
the kernel (counts to 12f400, and snoop on a Sparc 4 tells me this is the
whole kernel).  Unfortunately, this is as far as it gets.  I am using
this "latest kernel" vmlinux-960708 from vger.rutgers.edu
Is this the correct kernel for a sun4c?  Do the sun4m and sun4c use the
same kernel?  I can net boot with the vmunix, why not vmlinux?
any suggestions?

Tnx,
Brian

What next - a watchdog reset? Or it just hangs? Can you get back to
login prompt with L1-A? If yes, it whould be very helpful if you
save the output of ".registers" and ".locals".

Yes.

1. Sparc Linux and sparc clones

This is kind of two questions in one

I've just acquired an un-needed sparc clone from work - it's badged "Solair",
has a label underneath stating that it's made by DTK computers and anounces
itself as a "DTKstation/Classic+". I though that I might have a look at the
sparc port for fun.

So I copied the RedHat 4.0 sparc boot image (the v2 image since the machine
claims a version 2.9 ROM) and booted it up.

The kernel loads, identifies all (I think) of the hardware gets as far as
loading the ramdisk image and produces the message
   "VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)."
and then hangs

So...

Is the problem that it's a clone (looks like a Sun to me,  right down to the
ROM commands but I've not had much experience with clones).

Is the problem that it's a Sun4M (I recall that the sparc version doesn't work
on all of the sparc chips).

Is the problem that this machine is headless - it's connected to a VT220 (well
a Wyse pretending to be a VT220). Is there the equivalent of the serial console
patch for the sparc port and do I need it ?

Is it something else (all suggestions gratefully recieved).

Regards

Paul.
