Tekram SCSI host adapters, anyone?

Post by Wei Wan » Thu, 02 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I would like to buy a decent SCSI/PCI card for my Linux box and spoted a
Tekram DC-390F UW PCI for $87. It is based on a Symbios SYM53C875
Ultra-SCSI chip. Does anyone have any information for its compatibility
with Linux?

Thanks for any help!

I haven't tried Linux yet, so I don't know how well the TekrAm card
will work.  However, I have one in my system and plan to add Linux
soon.  My search of the web turned up the following:

1) Kernel support is not present except in recent versions.

2) TekrAm has drivers on their Web site for both Red Hat and
Slackware, including instructions for including them in your boot and
root disks.

In addition, I can report that the card has given good service under
OS/2 for over a year.

Supposedly its supported in newer kernels 2.0.3x
I'm very happy with my Symbios 53C810 narrow PCI controllers.

Since I have a wide drive running on a narrow controller with a 68 to
50 pin adaptor, I'm in the market for an ultra wide controller.  Who's
selling the Tekram DC-390F for $87?  I've thusfar  seen only good
things said about this Tekram controller on comp.periphs.scsi.

Works fine with newer revisions of the Kernel (2.0.31 or greater, newer
2.1.xx's, 2.1.79 works for me).  When configuring choose the NCR53C8XX
driver and not the NCR53C7XX,8XX driver.

As far as I know you shouldn't have any problems since the NCR/Symbios
53C875 chip is well supported in Linux. Also Tekram actually has a
linux driver directory on their ftp server (haven't checked it out),
though this card should work out of the box on newer kernels
(2.0.x,2.1.x).

I'm using one right now -- RH5 auto-detects it & everything.

Very fast card, and for the money, I can't think of one better.

However,  when i try to connect with both ultra-wide scsi (68pins) and ultra
scsi (50pin) channel at the same time , the device connecting with ultra scsi
channel disappeared.
i.e: it appear on the booting with bios from card, but it doesn't work on the
software initializing Also , i had tried to use with different version of
linux, it happen on the RH5 and new openlinux, but the problem is never on the
bootdisk provided by the tekram.

1. Tekram DC390 SCSI host adapter problems

Microstar PCI motherboard
486DX2 80MHz AMD Processor
Tekram DC390 Fast SCSI II host adapter (PCI)
Matrox Millenium
SCSI CD-ROm
SCSI HD
NO IDE DEVICES

I have tried kernals 1.2.8 and 1.3.45, and neither of them find the adaptor,
so I can't continue with the installation. I would appretiate some help :-)

BTW, linux extracts this ID from the DC390: Vendor ID 7 Device ID 519

Thanks in advance
