ATI Rage Mobility works with XFree86 4.0

Earlier, I've brought up the question on how to make X work with the ATI
Rage Mobility chipset.
This chipset sits in my Compaq Armada V300 among others.

I've only made the chipset work with the 3.3.6 SVGA server, which is
very slow.

Happily, it works very fine with the ati module of XFree86 4.0.

Just set it up with XFree86 3.3.6 or the like and compile the whole
thing without any mods to the site.defs file. Then make install and
install.man and use xf86config to make a basic XF86Config file. Now
you're up and running. It worked for me at least.

Tested with:
Compaq Armada V300 w/ ATI Rage Mobility 2xAGP
Mandrake 7.0 (and 7.0-2 ;-)
Linux 2.2.14
XFree86 4.0 source distribution

i know you didn't post only to be bothered by newbie question,
but i'm desparate. i have same video card in my Gateway
9300 laptop. Redhat 6.1 autoprobes video card correctly,
but can't find monitor type ! if i supply generic monitor
type, install continues, but first boot dies at LI prompt.
can you point me in right direction ? this is my first Linux
install.

update : LI hang was due to too large /dev/hda1 - still have problem
with poor video display - have switched to Slackware for time being,
not installing X stuff for now ....
thanks.........

Who cares. Invent some random monitor description and change it later.

: type, install continues, but first boot dies at LI prompt.

That just means you've slightly messed up the boot loader. Looks
like the standard attempt to boot to a kernel image above the 1024
cylinder mark. Boot from the floppy you made during the install
sequence until you learn better.

And don't use BugHat.  Try SuSE, Corel, Slackware (and Debian, if I
thought you might be able to do the install ...).
