Recording Sound

Recording Sound

Post by Mehmet T. Avciog » Sun, 16 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I am having a lot of problems recording sound. The recorded sound is not
understandable at all, lots of noise.. I have tried three different sound
cards with two different microphones, but no luck... I am using 2.0.28..
Are there any problems with the sound driver of 2.0.28?? Has anybody else
experienced such problems??

Thanks in advance for any help...

1. HELP problem recording sound under Linux

I have a dx2-50 box with 16Mb RAM running on Linux-1.2.13 with VoxWare
2.90. Also installed is a Panasonic CD-ROM and a Creative Labs Sound
Blaster 16Pro. The CD-ROM runs off the IDE port on the Sound Blaster
card, and both the CD-ROM and Sound Baster card is recognized by the
kernel.

As suggested by The Linux Sound HOWTO v1.12 I've run a few tests to
see if all works. Sending soundfiles out to /dev/dsp and /dev/audio
works. Playing music CD's is not a problem. /dev/sndstat shows that
the sound devices are working. Using DOS software shows that the
microphone also works, as wel as the mic port, BUT...

When recording sound using "dd bs=8k count=4 </dev/audio >sample.au"
nothing is recorded. The device isn't busy at the time so that is not
the problem. A simple "cat < /dev/audio" gives the following output:

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww......etc.

We've also got another Linux box running with the same basic config
but it uses an older Sound Blaster Pro card. With that we can record
sound and the usual output from "cat < /dev/audio" gives:

owwwwwwwwwwwwwowowwwwwwwwwwowwwwowwwwwwwwwwowwwwwwwwwwwwwowowoowwwwwww
wwwowowwowoowwwwowwwwwwwwowowwowowwwwwwwwowowoowwwwwwwwwwowowwowowwwww
wwwwwwwwwowwwwwwwwwwowowwowowwwwwwwwowowwowowwwwwwowowowwwwwwwwowowoow
owwoowowwwwwowowoowowwwwwwwwowoowowowwwowowwowowwwwwwwwowowwowowwwwwww
wowwoooowowwwwwwwwowowoowo......etc.

Note the o's in the second sample.

What could be the problem? Does VoxWare 2.90 not recognise the newer
sound card? Please e-mail me or reply to this post.
