CRASH: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference...

Post by Jeffrey No » Wed, 26 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I'm hoping someone can help me out on this crasher. I'm using
a cyrix 6x86 with 32M of ram and i seem to be getting the following
crashing me pretty frequently:
Mar 24 20:55:39 dreamtime kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer derefere\nce at virtual address c0000000
Mar 24 20:55:39 dreamtime kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 009a1000, |r3 = 009a1000
Mar 24 20:55:39 dreamtime kernel: *pde = 00102067
Mar 24 20:55:39 dreamtime kernel: *pte = 00000027
Mar 24 20:55:39 dreamtime kernel: Oops: 0000
Mar 24 20:55:39 dreamtime kernel: CPU:    0

A few seconds later, the machine just reboots. Sometimes it does
this fine, other times it hangs on the bios memory check. If I hit the
reset button, it comes up just fine. I've had this happen on all kernel
ranging from 2.0.20-.29 and i've appied the Cyrix kernel patch and
am using set6x86 with the following options:
#echo -n "Cyrix 6x86: Suspend-on-Halt, "
$BINPATH/set6x86 -p 0xC2 -s 0x08

#echo -n "Fast ADS, "
$BINPATH/set6x86 -p 0xC2 -c 0x02

# MAPEN (access to CCR4/5 enabled -- needed for settings below)
$BINPATH/set6x86 -p 0xC3 -s 0x10

#echo -n "Fast IORT, "
$BINPATH/set6x86 -p 0xE8 -s 0x07
#echo -n "Enable DTE, "
$BINPATH/set6x86 -p 0xE8 -s 0x10

#echo -n "Fast LOOP, "
$BINPATH/set6x86 -p 0xE9 -c 0x02

Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? Is it
the cpu? or bad ram? or are my configs above causing it? Any help
greatly appreciated!

1. INFO: kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

Out of the blue today I received this message across the system from the
kernel:

Kernel: Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at virtual address c0000030
kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 075c0000,
kernel: *pde = 00102067
kernel: *pte = 00000027

I am running v2.0.14 w/ SMP enabled on a Tyan S1668 MB.  Kernel compiled
with pentium pro optimization.  Anyone have any ideas?  I've never seen
this before.
