patch, Ensoniq AudioPCI + 2.0.35

Post by Nicolas FRANCO » Mon, 10 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Hi. I have a GW2k PII 233 with an Ensoniq AudioPCI card. I would like
to hear some sonds from Nunux but have failed to find a proper
configuration for my kernel.

First I have tried the Soundscape emulation, but the card is not
recognized.

Then I downloaded a free pnp patch (from
http://www.ife.ee.ethz.ch/~sailer/linux/pciaudio.html), but the patch
is for 2.0.33(4 ?), and my 2.0.35 kernel won't eat it by himself. I
have to do some work, which seems to be all comments.

When and how should I change the original files ? What to do next ? Do
I have to reapply the patch ?

Thanks for replying by email, I am a bit lost in big groups.

It's not a Soundscape, so naturally it's not recognized. The emulation
is done by the Win95 drivers which are not active under Linux.

To quote the page you referenced:

"For 2.0.3x, Alan Cox has prepared the 2.0.34-modular-3.patch.gz,
available from http://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/alan/Sound/, while
intended to be used on 2.0.34, can also be applied to the forthcoming
2.0.35 release with one reject in a readme file."

Sounds like that reject can be safely ignored then. Just configure and
compile.

1. Ensoniq AudioPCI & RH5.1 (2.0.35-3.1)

I've just installed an update to RH5.1
(kernel-headers-2.0.35-3.1.i386.rpm kernel-source-2.0.35-3.1.i386.rpm)
with support for the Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card. After a
couple of false starts I finally got to the point where I could do an
'insmod soundcore' followed by an 'insmod es1371'. That's the good news.

There is still no audio. If I do a 'cat /dev/sndstat' I get an 'Option
not supported...' message. Also, looking at dmesg output it appears that
the card is timing out during the configuration phase. I don't have the
exact wording right now since I'm back in Win95 for newsgroup access
(that's an entirely different story!). Not sure what's causing the
timeout - the card works fine under Win95.

Suggestions as to what's next on the list to try will be greatly
appreciated (other than paying $20.00 for a set of drivers :-)  )
