Just got this thing working myself.
Two pieces:
1) hpscanpbm from the normal sunsite places (free)
2) xvscan from Tummy Ltd at http::/tummy.com/ ($50)

1. HP ScanJet 3c scans very dark
I've been using the hpscanpbm utility with my HP ScanJet 3c scanner and scans
appear much darker than those I get from the TWAIN software on MS Windows.
Perhaps this has something to do with it having 30bit color resolution. My
question is: is there an update for this utility, or more interestingly, where
can I get a programming manual or programming information on the scanner.
