Strange disk errors I believe

Hey folks, I am at a loss at what is wrong here.

I have ftp'ed a 14Mb gzipped file to my linux box. This
operation works fine. Then I try to gunzip this file
and get a cryptic "IO Error". The partition I am trying
to gunzip on is 400MBytes in size of which about 200Mbytes
is in used

In checking dmesg, I notice the following, and in fact these
errors occur each time I try the gunzip. What have I configured
incorrectly ?

attempt to access beyond end of device
08:01: rw=0, want=721787156, limit=411632
attempt to access beyond end of device
08:01: rw=0, want=721787156, limit=411632
attempt to access beyond end of device
08:01: rw=0, want=721787156, limit=411632
attempt to access beyond end of device
08:01: rw=0, want=721787156, limit=411632

Just a stab at it...

It looks like it wants to expand the source file out to about 722Gb,
doesn't it?

Did you ftp with the 'bin' option set? Is there a possibility that the
decompression package is not compatible? Perhaps a big-endian vs.
litte-endian issue? Try the ftp again? Buy a really big disk, expand the
file and _please_ tell us what you find? Sorry...
