front case ports

Ok so I visited my local Compusa, such a long and dangerous journey.  Anyway
there I found a nice case and found that all of them have two usb ports a
mic and line in and a firewire port.  This is nice, well the usb is anyway
since i have two usb connections on my motherboard, one taken when I added
two usb ports to the back.  But my question is this.  That firewire port,
how do i get that to work? I know my motherboard doesnt have it, so I know
I will need a card.  But which one?  And besides the obvious reasons to
have firewire(ipod) why should I even bother.

Soundblaster Audigy has a version with a 1394 port. I have one and the
sound works fine. The 1394 appears to work but I have nothing to plug
into it.

Good question. I can't answer that.

Any firewire card should do the job, just ensure that it has an internal
port as well as externals.  Some don't.  Same goes for USB.

Firewire can be used for external HDDs, CDRWs, DV and other bits and
pieces.  It's not in very common use (less than 1 in 20 that I've seen)
so unless you believe that the iPod alone can justify the expense, don't
bother.  Firewire gear tends to be more expensive and more difficult to
get than USB.
