kernel dies when it tries to access a read-only SCSI dev.

hi

I have a AVA1522 SCSI controller with EZ-Drive 135 from SyQuest.
I noticed that when I insert a write-protected cartridge the kernel
dies with 'kernel panic'..  I am sorry that I cannot post the full
error report that kernel generated(I turned on verbose scsi error
messages.)

Is there any work-around(or opening a device with read-only attribute)
or kernel patch I can apply to my scsi driver (or should I try to write
my own .. I certainly don't want to waste time on this if the solution
is already available).

Thanks.
