What exactly is the problem you're having, if any?
Your settings look ok, but I might have some insight if you describe your
problem.

I've got a Motorola MobileSurfr 56flex in the laptop I'm using.

Unfortunately, my provider is still using 33.6K modems.

But...
Motorola has a special dial up site for testing 56 flex modems.
It ought to be able to test yours, just don't tell 'em it's
not a Motorola ;-).

It'll give you a ppp connection that you can't really do anything with
but it will test your modem.

You can log into the test sight via linux using the following scripts.

I tried it a few times and got connections in the low 50's to
high 40's range.

Use the scripts below and then look at /var/log/messages
for the connect rate.  My modem spits out strings like:
CONNECT: 115200
CARRIER: 33600

-----------BEGIN startmottst---------------------
pppd connect motchat /dev/ttyS2 115200 remotename motorolatest name test1 crtscts modem defaultroute noipdefault
----------END startmottst----------------------

--------BEGIN motchat-------------------------
chat -t 90 -v ABORT BUSY "" ATDT12054309500 CONNECT ""
-------END motchat--------------------------

Once upon a time, some amino acids started clinging together and

events, and evolutionary steps, Mark Sutton wrote this:

Yup... It wasn't too hard, either :)

Cool. It rocks for techies like me:)

I assume this is set like this every time you boot?

Hmm... Nex'r... Now whereve I heard that before. No-where I can think...
Oh, yes, my work sells about 50 of those a week. And about 400 Nex'r
products per week (I'd estimate). Did you get it from M2?

Anyway, I'm just using the ppp-on, ppp-off, and /etc/ppp/ppp-on-dialer
scripts that come with pppd. I edited them for my hostname, password
etc. And it worked first time.

If you want, I'll mail you the scripts I'm using. You want?

P.S. If you are having problems, error messages and the scripts you use
would be useful.

Is there an internet service provider in U. K. who supports a 56KFlux
modem?
