Sound Blaster Live! Value support

Sound Blaster Live! Value support

Post by Maxim Bazheno » Mon, 21 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I'm going to buy a sound card for my  Linux box (RedHat-6.0) and my
question is:
Is "Sound Blaster Live! Value"  supported by Linux? If yes, then what
should
I select during kernel configuration? Reading documentation about sound
support
in kernel, I couldn't find direct mentions about this card. Thanks a
lot.

This card is supported to some (?) extent by the Creative Labs
themselves. They provide a binary version of their propeirtary
drivers. Go to their web pages ald look for Linux, there you'll
find the driver.

Personally, I'd advise to look for a card that is supported under
GPL or other open source license.

I would not recomend this card unless for use with Linux.  Creative
has refused to release the source or specs for their card.  I have the
SBLive! Value and I haven't gotten it to work yet.  The problem is
that the precompiled binaries are for kernels 2.0.36 and 2.2.5.  Now
I've heard of it working for some people with different kernels, but I
have had no such luck.  I run Slackware 4.0 with kernel 2.2.6.

Unless you want to chance it and/or enjoy the pains of such an endevor
I would suggest to stay away from it.

That's just my opinion.   :-)

Thanks. Then another question: which one of SB cards would be fully and
easily
supported by Linux? I have  SB16 in my old computer and it works fine. Now I
need
another  card. What about SB AWE64 Value? It was mentioned in kernel
documentation.
However, this is ISA and I'd like to  get PCI. Is SB PCI128/512  supported
natively by
Linux?  Thanks again.

You can try the Creative/Ensoniq AudioPCI, which has a kernel
driver in 2.2.x.
