Using an ACER/Altos 900/N  and the integrated Adaptec AIC7870
except I get the following messages:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIC7xxx detect: devconfig 0x80, devstatus 0x5
aic78cc: Reading SEEPROM... aic7xxx: SEEPROM checksum error, ignoring
settings.
aic78cc: unable to read SEEPROM
aic7870: extended translation disabled
aic7xxx: enableing wide channel of 7870-Wide
AIC 7870-WIDE (PCI-BUS):
    irq 11
    bus release time 2 blcks
    data fifo threshold 100%
    SCSI CHANNEL A:
             scsi id 7
        scsi selection timeout 256 ms
scsi bus reset at poweron enabled
   aic7xxx: Downloading sequencer code.. done.
   Resetting the SCSI bus ...
 aic7xxx_isr: Encountered spurious interrupt
 aic7xxx_isr: Encountered spurious interrupt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And thats all she wrote!, died on me.
I've checked th cables, terminators, CDROM, etc
tried removeing other devices. makes no differrence

Just what is this AIC7870 anyway? something like a 2940W ?

I don't have any specs on it.

I have 2 other linux boxes 1.28 running OK
and have a spare IDE drive kicking around so I can do
some experimentation if any kind and wise linux guru's
want to dispense some saving grace,  YES THAT MEANS YOU!
If you know anything about this I sure could use the info!

I have the same problem with a digital Prioris server XL5100.
I at least would like to use the AHA2940 PCI adapter, but the AHA2940
kernel
tries to reset the AIC7870 even when it's disabled in setup!

i have a dec prioris XL4100 with onboard aic7870 controller and my working
kernel is 1.3.35. In the aic7xxx.c i have two lines to move in the read_seeprom
function. After that the driver worked good for me.

If you want the diff, mail me.

Bye,
Wolfgang Brungert

I have seen this kind of behavior, too.  I was installing linux to a
ICL Pentium workstation with AHA2940 (AIC7870) integrated on the
motherboard. This was with kernel version 1.3.something, which was
supposed to support AHA2940.  Couldnt get it to work, no matter what
I tried.  Finally I downgraded to 1.2.13 kernel with aic7xxx patches,
and lo and behold, worked like charm !  Maybe you oughta try
downgrading too, and see what happens ?
