Re-activate onboard graphic chip with AGP graphic card plugged?

Post by FUNG WAI KEUN » Thu, 22 Apr 2004 15:59:53

Hi all,

We have a PC with onboard graphic card.  Since we need to transform it into a high
performance graphic workstation, we install a AGP 8x NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 card with
dual VGA out into the PC for stereoscopic visualization.  However, the PC cannot
recognize the orginal onboard graphic chip any more (both in hardware and software, as
if the NVIDIA graphic card is the one and only one display card for the PC).  We need
the onboard VGA out to serve as a display console for our stereoscopic visualization
application so that we don't waste this VGA out.  We would like to know whether it is
possible to re-activate the onboard graphic chip so that we have 3 VGA out, (1 for
console and 2 for stereoscopic visualization) from our workstation?

Thanks in advance.

Some mainboards only allow *either* the onboard graphics or
an add-on AGP board.

Does you GF FX 5900 have dual VGA or VGA/DVI outputs?  Many
do.  You could use the built-in TwinView capabilities (with
the proprietary NVidia drivers).

Another thought, in your BIOS setup keep the onboard VGA
active, it will be the primary VGA out.  Then maybe you can
load the proper drivers for both.  Disabling the onboard VGA
in the BIOS setup makes it totally invisible to the
software.  (I think...)

Hi,

I can configure my graphic card to display twinview using the driver provided by NVIDIA.
I wonder whether it is possible to show three VGA display at the same with the onboard
graphics and the add-on card.

My motherboard does not allow me to keep onboard VGA active.  It is an Intel D865GLC.
Do you know which mainboard allow me to do so?

Thanks in advance.

Re-activate onboard graphic chip with AGP graphic card plugged?

In general, no, you can't have 2 AGP cards (or on-board
chip) active at once.  As you suggested, you can have
TwinView from NVIDIA, ie. dual-head display coming from one
VGA card.  But ATI is developing something which can support
3 displays, one from on-board chip and two from add-on VGA
card.  I don't know whether real products are ready or not.
Don't hold your breath.

My 2 cents.

Another option (for the original poster) is a PCI card.
ATI, PNY, Best Data and XFX all have PCI cards available.
These will not have the top end graphics chips like a
GF5900, but they should work...

just buy a PCI card

Pozdrawiam.
