Middle button on 3-button mouse not registering

Post by Eric Altendo » Sat, 17 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I have a generic 3-button mouse which claims to be MS mouse
compatible.  However, I'm unable to get XF86 to recognize the middle
mouse button...

I've tried the MS protocol (which works except for the middle button),
and the MouseSystems protocol (which doesn't work at all).  I've tried
all the options I could find, too.

thanks,
-eric

Have you succeeded in getting it to work with the Mouseman protocol?
Have you tried enabling ChordMiddle?

We have some cheap mice by Dexxa that claim MS and Logitech
compatibility; they require:

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol    "Mouseman"
    Device      "/dev/mouse"

# ChordMiddle is an option for some 3-button Logitech mice

    ChordMiddle

EndSection

Good luck!

There is no such thing as a 3 button MicroSoft mouse...

To use 3 buttons you have to use the MouseSystems protocol.
If your mouse is "generic" it may have a switch to select the
protocol. Some Mice do not have that switch but if you
start them with a button pressed. X11 has some option to
drop the DTR signal to the mouse when it starts (I do
not remember what option that was). You my need to use that
option.

I got sick from using that, opened the mouse and found the
place on the PCB where I has to solder a jumper wire. No
it is permanently in the MouseSystems mode.

Off course, this is in the condition that your mouse does support
the MouseSystems protocol. You also have to change the
Mouse definition in  the pointer section of XF86Config.

I had a Microsoft/MouseSystem compatible mouse with three buttons,
but could only get response to the middle button by bringing it up
in MouseSystem mode.  With the driver that they provided (grmouse)
you have to hold down one of the mouse buttons while powering up
the system in order to initialize it in MouseSystem mode.  After
such, you have to define it as a MouseSystem mouse for Windows, as
well as for Xwindows.  (If you use DOS/Windows much.  No idea about
the pretty lies you must tell W95.)

Check the flier or box that came with th mouse to see what you have
to do to put it in MouseSystem mode.  Failing that, try the power-up
with a mouse button held down.  (After that, reboots don't change
the mouse mode with whatever that mouse was.  I now use an old PC
Mouse optical three button mouse.  Less problems with dirty balls.

1. 3-button PS2 mouse on a 390 - middle button not working

Hi.
We have previosly used a 3-button serial mouse on AIX 3.2.5 but have just
upgraded to using PS2 and AIX 4.3.3.
"lsdev -Cc mouse" reports "mouse0 Available 00-00-0M-00 2 button mouse"
which doesn't look good (although our modern 44P witha  PS2 3-button mouse
reports only 2 buttons and yet all three actually work!).
Anyone got a 3-button PS2 mouse to work on a MCA machine?
Comparing lslpp between this machine and one with a working 3-button mouse I
see little in the way of differences.  I've brought
devices.isa-sio.chrp.8042.rte and devices.isa-sio.km.rte up to 4.3.3.50
(since that seemed to be the main difference) but no change.
The middle button is obviously detected.  When pressed the cursor freezes
until the button is released.  However the usual mwm menu for button 2 is
not displayed and our main application does not detect the middle button
being pressed.  We have replaced the mouse with a known good one, but that
didn't help.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeffrey.
