Which ethernet card should I buy? NE2000 is cheap or 3COM/etc.
expensive. Is there any difference in performance anyway?

If you have PCI, you should get a PCI ethernet card. The
bus-mastering PCI ethernet card with DEC 21040 only
costs about $80. I get 1.1MB/sec for ftp between two
Danpex EN9400s.
