DOS dosen't see CD drive, Help!

Post by Robert W Curre » Mon, 21 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a pc with two hard drives and a CD drive, and for some
reason in DOS it doesn't know that the CD drive even exists!

I have DOS/WIN95 on the Master drive (drive C:) and on the slave
drive I have LINUX RedHat 4.2.  I uses LILO to tell it where to boot from.
In windows, I see C: as the main hard drive, and D: as the CD drive, and
the slave drive doesn't even exist when I am in WIN95.  In LINUX I see
everything fine.  When I am in DOS I only see drive A: (floppy) and drive
C: and it will not see anything else.

The CMOS doesn't know the CD is there, I don't know how to set it.
I tried telling it there was another drive, but I didn't know what
settings to do, so it just hangs and doesn't boot if I don't leave drive
E: as "none"

HELP?!?!?!?

Win95 does not know how to handle a hd with Linux so if nothing else is on
that drive it should be ok.
Most CDROMs are ignored by the BIOS so it requires a DOS-driver to access
it in plain DOS.

Under DOS you will need two drivers: one should have come with
the CD-ROM drive (CD?????.sys) and the other one is MSCDEX.EXE.
Both must be installed (in that order); see help files for
parameters.

Whether the BIOS sees your CD Drive depends on the type. The only
chance for it to be seen is when it is connected to one of the
hard disk controllers.
If it has its own card or is SCSI, it won't be seen.

BTW, this is not a question for comp.os.linux.*.

This is actually a win95/dos problem.  You need to load the CD drivers
for DOS to see the CDROM drive.  If you need more help, try posting in
a win95 group.
