SCSI Tape - permission denied

SCSI Tape - permission denied

Post by r.. » Thu, 21 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I need advice regarding my SCSI tape drive not working.
Its a WangDAT mechanism on an Adaptec AHA2940 (not Wide, not Ultra-Wide,
just plain)
I've also got a Sony Spressa CD-Recorder/Reader and a small SCSI drive,
these work fine. Termination and cabling is all correct, SCSI addresses
are unique.

Below is my syslog. When I try a
#mt -f /dev/st0 erase
or
#mt -f /dev/rmt0
I get a permission denied. This is different, I used to get an I/O
error, but I recompiled the kernel with full support rather than modules
and kerneld. I also added the small SCSI drive so my SCSI host card
would load its BIOS.

Anyway, the only thing I can see from the messages below is that all
looks ok.
I also get a line
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 4, lun 0
in my /var/adm/messages file... things sem to be detected ok...

1. Login denied: No shell: permission denied

On my linux sever at the house I get this message when any user except root
tries to login:

login denied: no shell: permission denied

I caused this myself (yes I'm a newbie) while I was telnetting into the box
from out of state.  I was changing permissions with chmod.  Of course I
could no longer telnet into the box to fix the problem and had to wait to
fix it.  I knew I wouldn't have physical access to the server for 3 months
so I wrote down the commands I used to cause this problem, but by the time I
got home this was of course lost.
I added new users and tried them with no luck. I tried to chmod 777 the
/homes directory and this did not help
I know that this is a stupid problem but I have looked everywhere for the
answer.  If anyone can help me I sure would appreciate it.  If you could
email me it would be even better.
