ESS1688 & SB WaveBlaster II daughterboard

Post by Big Brothe » Mon, 03 Feb 1997 04:00:00

Picked up what must have been the last of the jumpered ESS1688
soundcards and also a SB WaveBlaster II daughterboard.  Wavetable runs
great under Win95 but won't go work in Linux.  Plain old sound works
just fine, as does FM synthesis, using the stock free sound driver that
came with Linux.  I am using DMA1,IRQ10,IO220.  How can I get Linux to
use the wavetable daughterboard?  In Win95, I have to switch the mid
device to external midi rather than the fm synth setting.  Your comments
and suggestions appreciated.  I had heard something disturbing about the
WaveBlaster daughterboard not being kosher under Linux.  Thanks again

Make sure your MIDI driver is also enabled. Then use playmidi -e
<file.mid> to play the MIDI file back via the wave table synth. The "-e"
option tells playmidi to use the external MIDI port (which is where the
Waveblaster card is found).

Mine is a pnp-card (ugh) and I'm having the exactly same symptoms. A
workaround for me is to boot to dos and then softboot to linux, after that
wavetable works just fine. Still need to use 'xplaymidi -e' (-e for
external).

1. OSS SB driver & ESS1688 & module reloading

I'm reporting it since I got the symptoms on two different systems
(Compaq laptop with SuSE 8.0 and Digital Celebris GL 5133 ST - both have
onboard ESS1688).

ESS1688 is on irq 5 and non-PNP. modprobe sb finds it by probing and
defaults to irq 7 (proably sensible default on some computers, I have
parport on irq 7). Fine, rmmod sb, modprobe sb irq=5. Works.

Now when I rmmod sb and try to re-insert it, things become strange.
sb module tells now that io, irq and dma parameters are all necessary.
It does work when I supply these parameters but why does it need them
the second time??? Looks like a bug.

Kernel is 2.4.19pre8 on Digital Celebris GL and SuSE 8.0 default 2.4
kernel on Compaq laptop (not here at the moment, can't check).
