Memory Not Recognized in Mandrake 8.1

I just did a hardware upgrade and, memory being cheap, I put in two DDR
512MB DIMMS into an Asus A7V266 motherboard.  The motherboard recognizes
the memory (the bios reports 1024MB) and Win2K sits on a partition and
recognizes the memory.  I use Lilo to boot and linux reports about 900MB
using the free command.  This happens despite using either
append="mem=1048576k" or append="mem=1024M" in lilo.conf.  How do I get
the last 124MB recognized?  Thanks in advance for the help.

Memory Not Recognized in Mandrake 8.1

Is sounds like mdk doesn't have HIGHMEM support compiled into the
stock kernel.  See if you can find different kernels to install
that might offer this, or just recompile the kernel and enable
HIGHMEM support.

# cd /usr/src/linux
# make menuconfig
Processor Type and Features->High Memory Support-> 4G
(etcetera.)

Don't know if Mandrake offers a kernel RPM with this high memory support
compiled in.  I would recommend compiling your own kernel anyway, as the
distros' releases always lag the official kernels and it's really not
hard to do it yourself.

Check your dmesg output to see what it spotted un the way up.  900 meg
free out of 1024 total doesn't sound at all unreasonable to me.

(The highmem stuff doesn't come into play at 1 gig)

Yes, it does, it limits you to ~896MB unless you enable >1GB support.
